MOUNT MERU 4 Days 3 Nights
Mount Meru is one of the major attraction sites in Arusha National Park. Climbing Meru can be used as a starter to climbing Kilimanjaro, a dessert after Kilimanjaro or just a trekking. You will sleep in huts.
DAY 1
Drive from Moshi town to Momella gate at 1500 m in Arusha for registration and payment. Then you hike through forest where you can see a variety of wild animals like Buffaloes, Giraffes, Zebra, Warthogs, Antelopes and birds. There are two routes from Momella gate to Miriakamba Hut.
Southern route (road). It takes 5 hours to Miriakamba Hut at 2750 m. Stay overnight.
Northern route (trail). It takes 3-4 hours to Miriakamba Hut at 2750 m. Spectacular views: Kilimanjaro Peak and Momella Lake. Stay overnight.
DAY 2
After breakfast hike out of Montane Forest to heather or moorland for 3-4 hours to Saddle Hut at 3750 m. Spectacular views: Kilimanjaro peak, little Meru. You can climb little Meru at 3800 m to help you acclimatize well. The rest of the day is spent for rest and preparation for summit ascent.
DAY 3
In the middle of the night after tea and biscuits, hike out of the moorland passing in the saddle are between Meru and little Meru for 6 hours to the summit at 4566 m. Spectacular views: Arusha town, Meru peak, Meru crater, Ash cone, cliff face and sunrise. After taking pictures go down for 2 hours back to Saddle Hut for rest. After lunch you descend for another 2-3 hours to Miriakamba Hut. Stay overnight.
DAY 4
After breakfast descend to Momella gate: you can either use the road for 3 hours if you didn’t ascend through it or the trail for 2 hours to reach Momella gate. There you sign out then drive back to Moshi town.
